The closing of the Mexican border throughout the Big Bend region post September 11, 2001 created great disruption for families living on both sides of the river.
Voices From Both Sides is a non-political effort to raise awareness of these border issues through music and cultural exchanges.
In May of 2013, the first cross-border musical event was held at the old Lajitas Crossing.
Musicians set up on either shore of the Rio Grande, and took turns playing back and forth while friends and families were reunited in the international waters.
This event is now held every May around Mothers Day, to highlight the diversity yet commonality of the Rio Grande region.
